Five offline RPGs worth the download size

Five offline RPGs worth the download size

May 23, 2026 · Lukas Brandt

Offline RPGs are a tricky category. Many mobile ones quietly need a connection for the smallest things, which defeats the purpose on a flight. We spent a while hunting for ones that genuinely run disconnected, and these are the ones that passed.

Our top pick right now is Ashfall Chronicle, which packs a full branching campaign into something you can finish on a phone. The stance-switching combat keeps fights interesting far longer than most mobile RPGs manage.

The common thread among the good ones is respect for your time. They let you save anywhere, they don't punish you for playing in short bursts, and they keep the story moving. The weaker entries almost always fell down on pacing.

A quick tip: before you commit to a big RPG download, pop your phone into airplane mode and play the opening twenty minutes. If it works there without complaint, you're safe.

We'll keep updating this list as we test more. The genre's in a good spot for offline players right now.
