Ashfall Chronicle

★★★★★ 4.7 Editor rating

Ashfall Chronicle is the kind of RPG you can actually finish on a phone without feeling rushed. You play a wandering courier who stumbles into a slowly dying kingdom and ends up leading its recovery. Combat is turn-based with a clever stance system where switching between offensive and defensive forms mid-fight changes which skills are available.

The writing carries it. Side characters have their own small arcs, and the choices you make early quietly ripple into later chapters. We especially appreciated that the whole campaign is downloadable and runs offline — no streaming cutscenes, no connection checks between battles.

The only rough edge is a slightly grindy middle stretch where level requirements outpace the story. Push through it and the back half is excellent. Easily one of the most complete mobile RPGs we've played this year.
